Olea europaea is an evergreen Tree growing to 10 m (32ft) by 8 m (26ft) at a slow rate. It is an ideal tree for bonsai training.
It is hardy in USDA zones 8-10. It is in leaf all year, in flower from August to September. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Wind. The plant is self-fertile.
Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.
Nick seeds with a file or knife and soak in water for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in fast draining medium. Cover pot with a glass pane or plastic wrap to keep medium moist and place in a cool site out of direct sunlight. 60-70 degrees F is ideal temperature. Some seeds will germinate in 6-8 weeks, and some will take longer.
These seeds were harvested in Italy in 2023.
