Eucalyptus citriodora plants, also known as Corymbia citriodora, are narrow, attractive eucalyptus species of trees that produce small white flowers and fruit that are little urn-shaped capsules. The 3- to 7-inch long golden, evergreen foliage emits a lemon scent and the tree is also known by the common name, lemon-scented gum. These smooth barked gum trees trees are native to Australia, but thrive in U.S Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 11.
If you live in USDA zones 8 through 11, you can grow eucalyptus shrubs and trees in the ground or pots outdoors. The ideal temperature range for growing eucalyptus is 65°F to 71°F (18°C – 22°C). All you need to grow outdoor eucalyptus plants is to choose a sunny location.
If you live in colder climates, you can easily grow potted eucalyptus plants indoors. Take the pots outdoors in the summer. Then bring them back inside in the fall to protect the plant from the cold.
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Cold stratify the seeds for 30 day then sow in a good potting mix and keep moist until germination. Eucalyptus trees do not like their roots disturbed, so plant into their permanent container. They are fast growing but cuttings can be easily rooted if the tree becomes too large.
