SUNDEW PLANTS MUST BE WATERED WITH RAIN, REVERSE OSMOSIS, OR DISTILLED WATER. TAP WATER WILL MOST LIKELY KILL THEM. Allowing the medium to dry out will induce dormancy. Plants will be shipped securely in 3 inch square pots shown, in long fiber sphagnum medium with a humidity dome attached.
The Drosera petiolaris complex sundews are found in northern Australia in a region with very high rainfall and temperatures in the summer and low rainfall but still hot temperatures in the winter. They appreciate temperatures in the low 30°s C (mid 80°s F) during the summer and do not particularly like temperatures below 18° C (65° F) at any time. This presents a challenge growing them without supplemental heating in temperate regions. If you can provide the plants with adequate heat they are fairly easy to grow. Drosera paradoxa is the easiest species in the group to grow since it tolerates lower temperatures. D. petiolaris is also a good choice for beginners as are many of the hybrids. These plants are also known as woolly sundews. The leaf petioles on many of the species are covered in white hairs. White hairs on leaves is a typical plant adaptation for sun protection in hot, dry locations. The hairs keep the leaf cooler and lower the transpiration rate. Since the more woolly species are more adapted to drier winter conditions that may be a factor in their cultivation. THESE PLANTS REQUIRE WET, HOT CONDITIONS AND BRIGHT LIGHT. Mature plants are about 3 inches in diameter and reproduce by offshoots. They are very easy to propagate by leaf pulling. All of the plants I currently have were propagated this way.
Sundews can be grown in peat moss, a peat/perlite combination, or long fiber sphagnum moss. I use sphagnum moss because it is a much cleaner medium when plants need to be divided and repotted. Drosera paradoxa produces flowers on scapes high above the leaves to prevent pollinating insects from being trapped.
If live insects arent available in your growing area you can mist the leaves every 2 weeks with a weak (1/4 strength) organic fertilizer such as Maxsea. Freeze dried bloodworms or fish flakes can be crushed and sprinkled on the traps too.
